The Programme
Working with communities primarily in Humla District and Sindhupalchowk, we have been:
- Facilitating access to and use of Veterinary Services
- Providing information and training towards the provision for improved agricultural Inputs
- Helping extend growing seasons, crop yields through the provision of plastic tunnels
- Enhancing access to markets linking communities up with district agricultural and livestock services
Rita Dula’s Testimony
As a one of a number of case studies carried out on behalf of Wilde Ganzen, one of our main sponsors, we spoke with Rita a 30 year old local (subsistence) farmer, who was happy to share his views on rural life and challenges and on some of the benefits of our programme:
Can you tell us more about your background?
We are six persons in family and dependent on agriculture
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Sindhupalchowk District, Thulo Sirubari. After marriage, I live in Kunchowk-2, close to my childhood area.
What kinds of work does your parents do?
My parents work in agriculture field and my spouse works as labor in wages.
What is your education?
I am five class passed.
What is important to you in your life?
Hard work and honesty
What kind of difficulties do you face?
Sometime needs to face difficulties in my view. I am not enabling to spend in food and education of my child properly due to lack of savings and enough food.
How does that make you feel?
I feel unfortunate to born in poor family but later I felt that if I could work hard with honesty then can happen better for living.
What do you need to be a more successful farmer?
To be a more successful farmer in my view, awareness and better knowledge, seeds, machinery, investment and skilled technician to guide us are more important.
How is the project going to help?
The project is helping me in agricultural seeds, Training provided me in Tunnel farming which made me confident for better farming than previous.
Sindhupalchowk Seed Distribution Project
Humla Agricultural Project
A project that typifies a key mode of working for the Nepal Trust in partnership with other charitable bodies.
With our in-field project team, on many occasions we are asked by other charitable bodies, who lack a local delivery capability, to undertake the supervision and governance and even hands on-delivery of their projects in Nepal.
This was the case with Norlha who approached the Nepal Trust to oversee and deliver on their behalf the Humla Agricultural project through our team based in at our centre in Simikot.
Now completed the project led to a marked improvement in crop yields, livestock husbandry, length of growing season and access to markets across many farming families in central Humla district.
